Building on Abilities

Our Story

About

At Futures, we believe in “Building on Abilities”. Our Mission is to support Pennsylvanians with disabilities to achieve greater independence and enhanced quality of life, to become participating, contributing members of the community, and to have greater choice and opportunity.

Our Vision is to continue refining a system of quality services and supports delivered in respectful, inclusive environments, to foster competent, evidence-based practice, and to extend our reach to all Pennsylvanians with disabilities who need our services.

At Futures, we are guided by our core values, embodied in the acronym T.E.A.C.H.

Transparency

We are committed to openly sharing information with both internal and external stakeholders. By actively listening to individuals with disabilities, their families, caregivers, and friends, we ensure their voices shape our decisions and actions.

We uphold the highest standards by embedding best practices in all that we do. Our focus is on consistently safeguarding and empowering individuals, families, and caregivers with exceptional supports and services.

Accountability

We uphold the highest standards of stewardship, ensuring that resources are allocated fairly and programs are managed responsibly. Our commitment to fiscal responsibility reflects our dedication to those we serve and the trust of our community.

Collaboration

By fostering partnerships with individuals, families, caregivers, and community organizations, we work together to fulfill our mission and vision, creating positive outcomes for the citizens of Pennsylvania. We also cultivate a workplace where teamwork, respect, and shared purpose empower our employees to thrive and make a meaningful impact.

Heart

We lead with compassion and empathy, putting care and genuine commitment at the center of all we do to improve lives and strengthen communities. We are dedicated to the inspiration of optimism and belief in the potential of every individual, fostering opportunities for growth and success.

A History of Futures Rehabilitation Center

Futures Rehabilitation Center was founded in 1968 under the Bradford Area School District in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania, with the aim of providing  people with disabilities a center for activity and sheltered employment.

We started out in the former Blaisdell Foundation School at 150 Kennedy St., but soon separated from the school district and became a private non-profit corporation. At the time, many individuals with disabilities were returning from institutions to live in their home communities and many others were choosing to stay at home because more services were becoming available locally.

As Futures’ programs expanded to meet the community’s growing needs, larger facilities were needed. In 1970, we rented space at the current Eagles Club on E. Main St., and in 1975 we purchased the former Butter Krust Bakery Building in East Bradford on what is now Futures Way. Since then, our daily service has grown from serving eight people to serving over 175 people each day.
