Longtime Futures Participant Achieves Community Employment

Futures’ Employment Services provides a number of services to individuals with developmental disabilities and to participating area employers. Employment Specialists Tammy Bennett and Deb Hatch train individuals to learn and improve various employment skills such as resume building, interviewing, learning and applying work ethics and social appropriateness.

In early 2021, John Jacks began working with Futures’ Employment Services to improve his job development skills. After working with his job coaches, John applied for, interviewed and accepted a part-time job offer from Darla Oaks, owner of Between Four Walls. John’s initial duties included cleaning the warehouse, delivery van and store, garbage duty, and seasonal duties such as lawn mowing and snow removal. Since his initial hire, new responsibilities were added such as assembling and arranging furniture displays in the show room, assisting with delivering new furniture, and removing and disposing of old furniture.

Darla commented that John is a great asset to her business because he maintains a positive and friendly attitude, is a great overall “handy man”, and is willing to learn and complete new job tasks as needed. John states he is very proud to be employed in the community and strives to do his best. His job and relationship with his boss are important to him. John continues to attend Futures Rehabilitation Center’s vocational training program when not working at Between Four Walls. One of his main job duties is loading and unloading the delivery truck and moving materials to various production areas of the workshop.

Futures’ Employment Services not only offers supportive employment services to individuals to help them acclimate into a new job and learn their job duties but also with helping an individual and their employer to retain employment if later faced with new challenges.
